Q&A with Sara Fitz of Sara Fitz Studio

Sara Fitz is the artist behind the beloved brand and online shop, Sara Fitz Studio. You have probably seen her watercolor prints in your favorite blogger’s homes (think Mackenzie Horan Beuttenmuller, Carly RiordanJulia Dzafic, etc.). She also has a seemingly endless flow of collaborations. The latest? Chappywrap! Not surprisingly her ginger jar blanket sold out in a snap, but it’ll be restocked in 2021. Sara has a wide range of products featuring her work from notecards to wallpaper. This past spring she began offering needlepoint canvases and I scooped a couple! I went with Navy + White Striped Shirt | SF-31 and Market Basket Tote | SF-30 both linked here.

I’ve been very lucky to get to know Sara through both of the Gallery Wall Art Giveaways (first and second) that we hosted with a fun crew of painters and photographers in 2020. As we’ve been able to chat I have learned about her unyielding love for her family, for building into her community, and for ice cream before bed! I nearly met Sara IRL when we were both scheduled to speak at the North East Coastal Creative Conference last March. Sadly, we have yet to say hello in person as the conference has moved to a virtual platform until COVID clear up and we can safely unite. I’m looking forward to that, but in the meantime, asked Sara if she’d be up for a little Q&A! I’m so excited to have her here with the second installment of the Inspiration Spotlight Series!
Your Business
  1. Since you started your business, it has steadily evolved. How did you decide to needlepoint canvases to your offerings? I’ve always been inspired by the art of needlepoint (though I’m a total beginner!) We were presented with the opportunity to team up with an expert in the field — to have our designs translated to canvases — and I couldn’t resist! It’s been pretty amazing to watch that line come to life!
  2. What is something that your followers and customers seem to be surprised to find out about you? Hmmm… I looove scary movies and ghost stories!
  3. How do you find community in the small business world among peers? I have to say, social media has been an incredible source of connection for me over these last few years. There is SUCH an inspiring community of like-minded entrepreneurs doing amazing things (and supporting one another in the most awesome ways!) I feel very lucky to have met — and to continue to meet — such hard-working, kind folks!!
  4. Can you describe a challenge that you faced with your business? How did you work creatively to solve it? Oh BOY! What challenge doesn’t one face when running their own business? I think one of the most difficult stages was developing that initial foundation from which to grow. There’s really and truly no short-cut through it… you must learn… make mistakes…and work your absolute hardest each day to keep your head up and your mind focused!!
  5. What can we look forward to seeing from you in 2021? Any hints? Ooooh, we have some really exciting things on the horizon — lovely collabs in new categories!! I always strive for our lines to be happy and fresh!

Getting Personal
  1. What’s your favorite room in your house? Our kitchen! It’s in the center of our home… the spot we all gather to chat, cook and snack!!
  2. What does a typical day look like for you at the moment? Like a circus, haha! Our boys are schooling virtually this year, so we’re wearing a few extra hats (grateful beyond words for their *amazing* teachers and our ability to work alongside them!) Basically our days start early and are filled to the brim with work, play, zoom meetings, lunch breaks, project development and order fulfillment… there’s never a dull moment!! And I couldn’t be more thankful!!!!
  3. What hobby/ies are you enjoying through COVID-19? No time for hobbies yet, lol! One of these days I’ll tackle some of our needlepoints!
  4. How do you intentionally create memories with your family? We try to enjoy the LITTLE things… walking around the neighborhood… playing outside with Murray (our velvety rescue pup)… baking… talking. We genuinely adore spending time together… and making the most out of every day activities 🙂 { Mama also takes a lot of pictures! }
  5. What’s your favorite texting GIF? I’m not the most skilled GIF user! I tend to send a lot of hearts!

This or That?
  • Read a book OR Listen to a playlist – This is tough. I LOVE to read… I just don’t have a ton of time for it. I tend to listen to music while I paint… so maybe I’lll lean that way!
  • Keep your style classic OR Let your style evolve –  Definitely a mix of both! I have pieces from High School { hello, J.Crew! } that I still swoon over… classic staples. But I do thrive on funky accessories and statement pieces!
  • Go on an adventure OR Stay in and relax – Depends on the adventure… if it involves driving up the coast, checking out antique shops and eating ice cream, I’m in!! In most cases, though, I’m happy as a clam at home 🙂
  • Rewatch favorites OR Search for a new show – Nothing better than a really good new series! { Miles and I splurge on tv time late at night to unwind and catch up… we’re usually commenting through whatever we watch, but it’s sort of our thing! }
  • Flats OR Heels – Flats!!! I appreciate the look of a gorgeous heel, but am for sure the one who would fall in them!
  • The more the merrier OR More fun with fewer – I’m going with fewer here!
  • Cleaning is my love language OR Cleaning is my nightmare – Gah! Not a big cleaning fan — but not much beats a freshly tidied house!!
  • Here for Humor OR Please be serious – Depends on the day, haha!

🔥Rapid Fire 🔥
  • Recent read: Currently reading my friend, Amy Bruni’s, NEW book Life With The Afterlife
  • Favorite garment of the season: All things sherpa
  • Quote to live by: Always do your best!
  • You’ll never see me: dancing sober, lol! { Actually, I barely ever drink… but do enjoy the occasional champagne at weddings… and when I do– watch out! I give Elaine from Seinfeld a run for her money!}
  • Favorite thing offered in your store: Eeeek! Wallpaper?! { My background is in architecture — I breathe all things house and home — for me, it’s the biggest honor/thrill to see my designs literally covering the walls!}

I hope you enjoyed this fun little Q&A with Sara! Be sure to follow along with her on Instagram and bookmark her online store! More needlepoint photos and links below-
